I did not realize you live off the grid!?! Is your van set up like one of those tiny house-trailer thingies?? I used to follow a female photographer who lived in one of those - just seeing the pics of it made my claustrophobia screech!! Noooooo!!! Plus, I have 2 50-lb rescue pups....just ainβt ever gonna be able to do that! Seems like it could be lots of fun, tho...
Hahah, Kathy! I cannot even imagine two 50-pound doggos in the van with me. There are people who do have multiple dogs on the road, though. I have a couple friend I know from the road who, along with the two of them, in a van not much bigger than mine (not very big) have three rambunctious dogs. Of course, when you live in vans and such, the outside is your living room.
Happy to join!! Please call me Kathy! Yes, Iβve been dabbling with it for quite a long time. Iβm also working on a grief journal that Iβd love to illustrate as well. Both of these projects have taken a backseat to my PB project, tho - for whatever reason, that project feels more urgent. Probably cuz itβs huge in total, tho smaller when looked at volume by volume. Iβm sure your tips and tricks will help me create my best work, along with Jeannieβs wonderful community!! βπ»ππ
I think itβs a great opportunity for people to benefit from your skills. And I like that your recording the workshops for those who are busy or affected by Timezone issues.
I wish this was something I could partake in, but at the moment I am just unable to pay for any subscriptions.
But nonetheless, I think this is a cold thing your doing :)
And oh my gosh, I hear that. If I were independently (or otherwise) wealthy, I would take out paid subscriptions for a handful or two or three or more of Substacks I love dearly and read regularly. For now, I boost and heart and engage and restack instead. We writers have to help each other grow together however we can. And I can't say enough how much I've appreciated your support and help in that way since early stack days for me. So thank you.
Also, your writing suggests you're pretty good at self-editing. ;)
What a great project, Holly! 'm sure that I need it, I'm also afraid to overcommit - lots going on right now, but I'm going to keep this in my Inbox and give it a good think. :)
Thanks, Katharine! It really is a good analogy for me. Often, as I'm writing, I'm able to quiet the inner critic--which feels like the inner parts of me (the child and all the rest) having permission to write it however it comes. And this is mostly through being like, no worries, the editor's got this. She can witness it all and help you make something beautiful and true of it. It helps me capture those high-energy, egoless first thoughts. I'm so glad that resonated for you.
The short answer is yes. The longer answer is sometimes. Ha! That wasn't much longer. J/K. The longer answer is that I've realized of late I put a very similar kind of creative energy into working with others' work as I do my own. For lots of years, I left only a small portion of it for my work. Since I'm now very committed to seeing a few of my own projects through, I need to be protective of that energy. So, I need to be taking on only a limited number of projects whose writing and authors I resonate with.
Yay! I'm so happy to have you be a part of it, Esperanza. Looking forward to connecting.
A preview of the first workshop will drop next Wednesday (Feb 7), and then the live Zoom will be on Saturday (Feb 10). I just did a beta practice workshop with my sisters, and I'm very excited to share.
Looking forward to your workshops!! I better get writing more!! βπ»ππππ
Yay! Kathleen, I'm excited to have you join. Looks like you're working on a memoir? Yay!

Yes, my van is setup like a home. I did most of the work or recruited friends to help. So it's kinda janky. But I love it. You can take a look inside here. https://hollystarley.substack.com/p/look-inside-the-rolling-desk-aka.
I'm in a cabin for the winter with Ruby the van out front so I can focus on writing and these workshops. :)
Thank you again for being here.
I would not describe it as janky - it looks like you have everything you need!! Kudos!! ππ»

This sounds awesome, Holly!

Thank you, Holly.
I have really appreciated your support and encouragement as well, it really means a lot.
And I know right!? If money wasnβt a concern, Iβd love to get a whole bunch of paid subscriptions from my favourite substack writers.
And thank you, I do my best, my partner also reads my writing before I share it which helps a lot.
Thank Holly :)

Thank you, dear friend!!
Also, know I think your work suggests you're pretty damn good at self-editing. ;)
I love the idea of the inner child corresponding with the inner writer, and the editor with "the guide." Kinda blew my mind

Do you still edit novels?

Makes sense.
Appreciate the shoutout, Holly! βοΈ
